We have goals in various parts of our lives but the mechanics of goal setting are the same. You need a clear objective, you need to be intrinsically motivated, you need to come up with a plan, create commitment and follow through. When it comes to effective goal setting a big part comes down on accountability. Some can hold themselves accountable but truth be told this is not the majority. In reality, we tend to break our own promise much more easy than promises to others. And this aspect is something you can use to your advantage! We’ll call it the power of positive peer pressure!
The power of positive peer pressure and how to use it:
As you have read commitment and following through are crucial in reaching our goals. But these are also the most challenging. How many of you know of people who sign up in January but are nowhere to be seen by March? I’ll bet you know someone. Here are a few lifehacks that can help you stick to yours.
Share your goals
A great lifehack you can use is to use your peers and here is how. After you have set your goals, don’t keep them to yourself. Select a few people in your life of which you know they are going to hold you accountable and share with them what you are going to do. You can use people who are positive and want to see you succeed but you can also use people you know who would love to see you fail. You’ll have to find out what works for you.
Make a bet
Another great incentive is when there is something on the line. Make a bet with a friend, a colleague or a relative. Again, you can use a reward system where you get something when you reach your goal or you can use a penalty when you don’t. That’s up to you. Do you want to put this one on steroids? Share your bet with the world (aka social media)
Join a group
Peer pressure at its finest and this one is easy. It could be as easy as joining a small fitness group class. You might not know the people at first but if the group is small enough they will notice that you are not there and you might feel more obligated to go because you’ll know they’ll notice. Have a friend join you and you can leverage this one even more
Online coaching and training
A big part of the effectiveness of online coaching and training is that you know that somebody is keeping you accountable. You’ll create a training plan that works, you’ll schedule it together in your calendar and now you make a commitment to your trainer that you are going to stick to it. By going through this process with somebody else you suddenly have someone you are accountable to. Furthermore, through the use of technology, your trainer can now track if you are doing your workouts and help and motivate you when you fall behind. Online coaching and training is a great and very cost effective way of incorporating accountability.
These are a few ways you can hack peer pressure. Use your innate human nature as your advantage and go get your goals!
